Drove 7 hours with two children under the age of five to hear Jenn Herman speak about Decoding the Instagram Algorithm & Using it to your Advantage at Social Media Day in Jacksonville. She first told her Facebook group about this upcoming conference at the beginning of the year.

So why use Instagram? 

Lower Bounce Rates than other social media platforms. If someone takes the time to visit the link in your profile, they are really interested in your material because it took them 3 steps to get to that bio link. (That person saw your post in their feed or story, visited your profile, clicked on the bio link)

Hashtags

There is no guarantee your hashtag might show up on a listing of your used hashtags. Weird, I know! It shows up on popularity, may even be blocked if its too popular such as using July 4th related hashtags.

Content

Content is distributed to you depending on how often you interact with it (such as if you always interact with pictures of dogs).

Bit more priority is placed on most recent content. Try to post more of what will make is audience will interact.

Look at the posts with most engagement, i.e. pictures of me in it get more engagement.

FYI – The more reach you will get will be based on how much you spend time on the platform.

Stories

Are chronological if you don’t check them. Now if you always see my stuff you will see that first. Instagram Live gets priority.

Feed

What you do with user preference based on what you see. If you never interacted with content, not necessarily going to be seen.

FYI – Did you know that posts with music, might receive a violation that may last for 3 days if you include music that isn’t yours.

Bonus tips:

  • Focus on less content and better content.
  • Connection emotionally, use your caption
  • Fun account to follow: TSA
  • Create more of what you want your audience wants (look at insights to determine)
