Top SEO Insights from Analyzing 300 B2B Websites: Actionable Strategies for Business Success
Thanks for joining me as I shared my favorite sessions from a sold out marketing conference in Boston that I attended. Let’s pivot from what I have recapped recently (see very bottom) and dive into SEO. Search Engine Optimization.
Imagine having SEO Takeaways From Studying 300 B2B Websites? That is the theme of today’s recap is from Tom Shapiro. I can’t wait to share with you with that I found from his session. This information is relevant to now, not something that wouldn’t have worked 12 months ago according to him. Take notes and get ready to step it up with SEO.
Whenever I talk to a “SEO” person, I always identify them as a magician who gets a bunny out of their hat, I don’t know what the trick is but they help with your google ranking.
Back story, this info is coming from 300 B2B (business to business) sites that had 15,000 data points. In fact, it involved sites that reach included 10,000 organic viewers to a max of 10M in monthly organic traffic.
Most of my current readers are like myself, solopreneurs or someone in a small team. I’m here to share what I learned and share it with you. Find what works best for you and what you can do. Don’t get overwhelmed.
Here goes:
Audience Segmentation is one of the strategies where you customized the audience website to your target audience.
Another strategy that works well according to Tom is including original research on your website. Websites offering original research got 29.7% improvement in organic traffic vs those who did not which was 9.3%.
Both of the above examples might be harder to pull off for us (solopreneurs/small team members) but another tactic we can do that is effective is offering online tools. In his study, offering a free online tool such as an online “ROI calculator” increased organic traffic by an average by 36.5% vs 13.1 for those not using online tools. Think about what you can offer to your visitors that could be a good tool for your business?
I think you will hate me for the next tip that was shared. Before doing that, I will share that I’m currently blogging about once a week since I came back from Boston from this conference where I met all these fabulous presenters. He recommends we blog 9 times a month!
Yes, I know. It is a lot of work but according to him, if you blog 9+ a times/month you will see a 35.8% improvement in organic traffic vs 16.5% for those blogging 1-4 times/month. Think of content hubs, where you can group posts together in categories or blog posts that are evergreen (that never go out of relevance) in your industry.
“The Top 10% of performers blog 11x per month on average.”

Next tip, word count! If you were overwhelmed with my previous tip shared from Tom’s session. You’ll really either love or hate the next one. Websites with 2,000+ words got 10.2x higher organic growth rate. This is a good time to mention if you decide to write this long, make sure you add call-to-actions (CTAs) not at the very bottom of the article, like how I personally do so I don’t sound so sales pitchy here but throughout your article (like I did above).
Finally, the last takeaway was create custom graphics to share on your site. According to his study this means, that “custom graphics in their blog increased organic traffic to the website on average by 28.8% vs. 12.1% for those websites without custom graphics (e.g., using stock images or no images).” Check out the source of all this SEO knowledge by clicking here to see Tom’s LinkedIn.
What stood out to you? Which option or options will you be incorporating into your website? I’m going to try to make longer blog posts. But I really don’t enjoy writing out that much. Maybe I really need to be passionate when I blog and just highlight a case study from a client or friend to fire me up to write that many words at once in a post?
