Key takeaways from Gen Zalpha’s (recap from Pion webinar)

If you are a parent or cater to kids ages 9-13 years old, check out these slides from a webinar by Pion and as a mother/marketer, here are my takeaways:

  • Ages 9-13 years old
  • They prefer videos that are 45 seconds or less, include sticky hooks, less than 300 words on articles, good imagery,
  • “social proofing is key”
  • 53% prefer to consume content that is educational that “teaches them something new”
  • They like peer to peer (people from their own generation) vs influencers (older generation)
  • Spend time on TikTok and Snap (not Meta owned platforms)

Huge stats that I had to replay several times because I wanted to make sure I had it right because it had a huge impact on me:

If they use reading for pleasure when they get to their teenage years, they often have better wellbeing and less anxiety.

The impact on reading for pleasure: 4x more powerful on progress on vocabulary and math and spelling at age 16 than anything else, than parental education and social economic status.

For my mom friends or parents of daughters the speakers were Luna, an app where teens can ask questions, learn about topics tailored to them, plus journal and track their moods and cycles AND Bookmark, (from their site) we exist to change children’s life stories through the joy of reading. As a leading reading charity for primary school children, we partner with schools to develop whole-school reading cultures and provide one-to-one reading support.
