What We Learned at The Uprising Retreat:
AI, Authenticity, and the Future of Marketing
This week, Melanie Borden from Human to Brand and I reflected on our experience at The Uprising Retreat by Mark Schaefer, and honestly, it did not feel like a typical marketing conference. We captured our discussion over video, please see below.
Held in the Smoky Mountains, The Uprising brought together marketers, business owners, corporate leaders, and creators for deeper conversations around AI, fear, visibility, authenticity, leadership, and human connection. Instead of transactional networking, the retreat created space for honest conversations, vulnerability, and meaningful relationships.
Fear, Uncertainty, and Leadership
One of the biggest takeaways from Mark Schaefer’s keynote was learning how to reframe uncertainty instead of fearing it.
Mark challenged attendees to stop waiting until they “feel ready” and reminded us that growth, innovation, and great marketing often happen in uncertainty. One line that deeply resonated throughout the retreat was:
“Leaders dispense hope.”
For many attendees, especially marketers and business owners navigating rapid AI changes, that message felt incredibly timely.
AI Should Enhance Your Voice, Not Replace It
AI was naturally one of the biggest conversations throughout the retreat.
Melanie and I discussed tools like ChatGPT, Claude, WhisperFlow, Perplexity, and Plaud, along with the importance of avoiding generic “AI slop” content that loses the human side of a brand. The biggest reminder from the retreat was simple:
People still want people.
They want honesty, stories, empathy, and connection. AI can support our workflows, but authenticity is still what builds trust.
Why Human Connection Still Matters
The Uprising reinforced that visibility is not about being everywhere online or constantly performing for algorithms.
It is about helping people feel:
- Seen
- Heard
- Valued
- Understood
One of the strongest themes throughout the retreat was that the future of marketing belongs to the most human brands, not just the loudest ones.
