Book Review: Women in High Gear and List of Action Items

Women in High Gear: this book is ideal for entrepreneurs, young graduates, and people stuck in a rut in their careers. It follows two different journeys of women who succeed in business through their roadblocks and successes. I’m impressed how much into detail they divulge about their personal career experiences. I personally think like Anne but would like to start incorporating ideas from Amy’s perspective.

Fresh from attending the SoSlam conference, I was eager to read this book from the emcee Amy D. Howell and co-author Anne Deeter Gallaher. I met both ladies and was inspired to grab their book at SoSlam and read right away!

My top 3 List of Action Items — from this book:

  1. Mentioned on pgs. 50-51, watch a YouTube video of Alan Mulally, Ford CEO, titled “A Conversation with Alan Mulally” for this communication and leadership style.
  2. How to deal with emotional resilience at the workplace, nine tips to serve you well, pg. 68
  3. Social Media and Legal tips from @GlenGilmore, who will be launching his book, “Social Media Law for Business: A Practical Guide for Using Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Blogs without Stepping on Legal Landmines” (due out in December).

To me, it meant the world that these two authors mentioned the value of Engagement being common thread uniting them to others through Twitter (p.g 76).

My favorite quotes from the book:

“To any CEO who’s skeptical at all: You have to. You have to create a social enterprise today. You have to be totally connected to everyone who touched your brand. If you don’t do that, I don’t know what your business model is in five years.” – Angela Ahrendts, CEO, Burberry

“You’re known by the company you keep.” – Aesop’s Fables 255 (my mother would tell me the same thing in Spanish when I was growing up and choosing my friends wisely)

“I knew at a very young age I wanted to run a company, and in school and beyond I was training all my life for what I do today” – Denise C. Morrison, CEO, Campbell Soup Company
